Sixteen lifeguard teams from across the state recently participated in the 12th Annual American Red Cross Lifeguard Competition hosted by the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter at the Wayne C. Kennedy Recreation Complex in St. Louis.

In addition to the two disaster relief workers who deployed from St. Louis on Tuesday, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter is now deploying an additional six local disaster relief workers to support the relief effort underway in Southern Texas as Hurricane Dolly has caused excessive rainfall and major flooding.

7/22/2008 - Red Cross Deploys St. Louis Emergency Response Vehicle and Disaster Relief Workers to Texas

The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter is currently deploying two volunteers and its Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) to San Antonio, Texas as part of a pre-deployment team for Dolly, the tropical storm which has now been upgraded to a Category 1 Hurricane.

With flood waters beginning to recede and the need for shelter to house people has declined, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter is moving into the next phase of operations at Winfield Senior High School by closing the shelter.

According to the White House press office, President George Bush today declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Missouri and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area.

6/24/2008 - American Red Cross Reopens One St. Louis Area Emergency Shelter

June 24, 2008 (11:30 a.m.) After the levee breach in St. Charles early this morning, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has reopened the shelter at First United Methodist Church. Both the St. Charles shelter and the shelter at Winfield High School will remain open for as long as needed. Anyone needing Red Cross assistance can call 314.516.2700.

6/23/2008 - Red Cross Focuses Relief Efforts on Winfield in the St. Louis Area

With community efforts underway to shore up the secondary levee just east of Winfield and provide more sandbaggers, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter is keeping its shelter at Winfield High School open for as long as needed.

6/20/2008 - Red Cross Scales Down Operation to One Shelter in St. Louis Area

With predictions from the National Weather Service that the Mississippi River won’t crest as high as originally anticipated in St. Charles County, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter is closing its shelter at the First United Methodist Church, located at 801 First Capitol Drive, at 6 p.m. today.
