Disaster Response to Hurricane Katrina is Unprecedented in Red Cross History
The American Red Cross' preparation and response to Hurricane Katrina has resulted in the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster in the history of the organization. To date, the Red Cross has opened more than 615 shelters and evacuation centers in 17 states to provide safe refuge for more than 155,000 evacuees, while serving more than 4.6 million hot meals to those in need. |

Red Cross Assists More Than 5,400 Hurricane Evacuees in St. Louis
The disaster caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita is unprecedented in Red Cross history, in terms of the number of people affected, the extent of the area impacted and the scope of the destruction. Katrina alone impacted 15 times the number of families needing assistance after all four hurricanes in 2004. |
