In the wake of Hurricane Katrina's second U.S. landfall as a devastating Category 4 storm, the St. Louis Area Chapter is dispatching an additional 8 volunteers to assist in the ongoing recovery effort. These deployments bring the total number of local St. Louis area volunteers responding to Hurricane Katrina to 20.

KSDK NewsChannel 5, in partnership with the St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross and in cooperation with KETC and KEZK, presented a one-hour primetime special, Hurricane Katrina: St. Louis Responds on September 1, raising $5.1 million.

To date, the Red Cross has opened more than 615 shelters and evacuation centers in 17 states to provide safe refuge for more than 155,000 evacuees, while serving more than 4.6 million hot meals to those in need.

Helping families, friends and colleagues reconnect after Hurricane Katrina remains a high priority of the American Red Cross. To make it easier for people to find one another, the Red Cross teamed with Microsoft and San Diego Supercomputer Center to consolidate information from many different websites.

Katrina alone impacted 15 times the number of families needing assistance after all four hurricanes in 2004.

5/29/2006 - Red Cross Disaster Action Team Responds to St.Charles County Fire on Glen Echo

On Monday, the St. Charles County Service Center dispatched a Disaster Action Team to a condominium fire on Glen Echo in St. Charles County to support the recovery of three families, including seven individuals, and provide assistance to 38 emergency personnel on the scene.
