7/25/2006 - Magen David Adom Accepted

The American Red Cross has announced the membership of Magen David Adom into the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. The American Red Cross has been attempting to get MDA recognized since Israel gained Statehood in 1948. The announcement comes after a recent Diplomatic Conference adopted the Third Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions.

7/25/2006 - Fire Destroys Arnold Retirement Community Home

No one was hurt during an afternoon fire Monday that completely destroyed a condominium in a senior citizens community in Arnold. An American Red Cross Disaster Action Team from the Jefferson County Service Center responded to the fire and is supporting the recovery effort of those displaced by the blaze.

5/29/2006 - Red Cross Gives Hope for Inclusion of Magen David Adom

Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, American Red Cross national Chairman for the Board of Governors and former U.S. ambassador to Finland, recently visited St. Louis and met with members of the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council. McElveen-Hunter thanked the community for its support and relayed to the group a message of hope for the inclusion of Magen David Adom into the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement.

5/29/2006 - 600 Classes, 5,000 Students, One Award

As a Red Cross volunteer, Warrenton Police Sgt. Carol Dieckman has been saving lives one classroom at a time. Officials with the Red Cross estimate that in the past 20 years, Dieckman has taught more than 600 classes - for about 5,000 people - in First Aid and CPR.

5/29/2006 - Hundreds of Bosnians Turn Out for DNA Project

Approximately 300 blood samples were taken by the International Committee on Missing Persons (ICMP) during a recent visit to metropolitan St. Louis. The four-day trip was the second venture into St. Louis, the home of the second largest concentration of Bosnians in the U.S.

Linda and Giles Culver were given the Disaster Services Award by the St. Louis Chapter of the American Red Cross for making a significant impact on the lives of disaster victims. "Working with the Red Cross is really the greatest thing we've ever done," said Linda Culver. "It's so heart-filling to help someone."

Rick Stevenson, of Chesterfield, recently received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the American Red Cross. This award honors the volunteer with the single most profound impact on Red Cross programs and services over the previous year.

5/29/2006 - The Life You Save May Be a Coworker

Employees of MasterChem Industries of Antonia learned firsthand that it pays to be prepared for emergencies. Three workers from the company were recognized by the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter for their emergency response efforts in two separate incidents in 2005.

5/29/2006 - School Nurse is Honored for Saving Boy

Nurse Janet Mueller was in her office at Wentzville South Middle School when a coach rushed to tell her a seventh-grade boy had collapsed in physical education class and was unconscious on the gymnasium floor. Mueller performed CPR for more than 10 minutes until paramedics arrived. The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter recently presented the Lifesaver Award to Janet Mueller for saving Billy Terbrock.

5/29/2006 - Youth Active in Outreach Programs

During a KJFF interview on March 10, Deane Adam, director of AmeriCorps and Youth Services for the St. Louis Area Chapter, was joined by Alexa Pippin, a Red Cross AmeriCorps member, to discuss the importance of youth to the Red Cross movement. A key component of the St. Louis Area Chapter's strategic plan is to "inspire a new generation of Red Cross volunteers and supporters."

5/29/2006 - Red Cross Reaches More Than 30,000 Through Aquatics Programs

In preparation for the busy summer aquatics season, KJFF Radio (1400 AM) hosted a Red Cross interview to focus on St. Louis Area Chapter water safety programs, including Learn-to-Swim courses, lifeguard certification and the Aquatic Examiner Service. Important water safety tips were also featured.

5/29/2006 - Broken Gas Line Cuts Off Service to Homes in Jefferson County

A broken natural gas line Monday afternoon forced the evacuation of people living in 46 mobile homes and cut off gas service to 460 residences in Jefferson County. Red Cross volunteers staffed a nearby VFW hall to provide food and a place to sleep while crews worked to restore service late Monday.

5/29/2006 - Senior Adult Services Available in Jeffco

American Red Cross senior adult services in Jefferson County were featured during the Feb. 10 Red Cross interview on KJFF Radio (1400 AM). The following three services were highlighted: Lifeline, disaster education presentations for senior adults and the Family Caregiving Program.

The stewardship of the American Red Cross in keeping Magen David Adom's battle for equity on the front burner has been most gratifying. They were the brokers for what was right, for getting to the heart of the matter: allowing Israel to join the world health community with its lifesaving services.
