A Florissant teenager and two Overland police officers recently were recognized by the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter for using their first aid and CPR training to save lives.
Kimberly Boyd, 13, of Florissant, and Overland officers Brian Foster and James Kalinich were among six area residents receiving Lifesaver Awards from the Red Cross at a ceremony in Creve Coeur on July 23.
The Lifesaver Award program, sponsored by AAA, is designed to inspire people to get trained in first aid and CPR.
Kimberly Boyd saved her father's life. In April 2006, Larry Boyd suffered an asthma attack and called Kimberly for help. He then collapsed on the floor.
Boyd immediately called 911 and began performing CPR. As she told a Journal reporter in February, there wasn't time for panic. "It was chin up, then hold the nose, breathe into the mouth two times, press three (chest compressions), check the pulse and repeat," she said.
Paramedics arrived to continue care. Her father recovered.
"I was lucky she was there, because all that were there were my little boys and my littlest was only 4 and the other was 8," he said. "I was glad she was there to call 911 or I would have died for sure."
Overland officers Brian Foster and James Kalinich also helped save a life.
One night in March, they were dispatched to the scene of a one-car accident. They saw a man lying on the ground, next to his car, when they arrived.
After assessing the victim's condition, Foster and Kalinich quickly started CPR.
Just after they began CPR, flames started coming from the nearby wrecked car. They moved the victim to a safer location and resumed CPR.
They continued administering CPR until paramedics from the Community Fire Protection District arrived.
