Sherwood Elementary students raised $2,093 for tsunami victims last month. The money will be donated to the American Red Cross for the relief effort. The students held a Jump Rope for Tsunami fundraiser from Feb. 14-18, when they donated money during their physical education classes for the cause. During P.E. classes that week, they got to bring snacks, drinks and CDs and listen to music while they jumped rope.
“It was a good lesson,” said Tina Zweifel, the school’s P.E. teacher. “We talked about the tsunami, and I was surprised what the kids knew about what had happened, even the kindergartners through second-graders. Some had learned about it through Nick News (on the Nickelodeon television network).
“We talked about what had happened and how a lot of people were killed and homes were destroyed. It was a good civics lesson.”
Three students tied for the top money raisers – first-grader Emily Dabski, third-grader Ryan Hirth and sixth-grader Andrew Hirth. Each one raised $100. Zweifel will treat the three students to lunch on March 3.
Sherwood teacher Jamie Holder’s third-grade class was the top money-raising class. Those students will get an extra recess, Zweifel said.
