During the month of April, the Northeast Correctional Center (NECC) community came together to help the Red Cross with their Measles Initiative.
Measles kills at least one child a minute somewhere in the world. More children die of measles-related illness than AIDS or malnutrition.
The five inmate organizations – Sanguine Toastmasters, NECC NAACP, V.V.A., Offenders Offering Alternatives, and Restorative Justice – first pledged money in support of the Red Cross’ efforts. They in turn asked the general population to give, and give they did.
Within the month of April, the NECC community collected $2,100. That money will help the Red Cross to vaccinate 2,470 children from a disease that is totally preventable.
Kathy Lass, Director of International Services stated that the NECC community gave the largest one-time donation to date.
Without the generosity of the general population, the inmate organizations and the support of the administration, this giving would not have been possible. The NECC community should be an example to other similar communities of the possibilities of helping great organizations like the Red Cross.
