The St. Louis Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and A.G. Edwards are launching the A.G. Edwards Safe Ride Program, which addresses the transportation needs of many St. Louis area seniors. According to a recent report by the Surface Transportation Policy Project, the United Sates is currently ill-prepared to provide adequate transportation choices for our rapidly aging population. This problem is evident in the St. Louis community, which has the nation’s sixth highest percentage of residents 65 and older, in addition to the fourth highest concentration of seniors who live alone.
The A.G. Edwards Safe Ride Program aims to help ease this burden for seniors. Thanks to a $200,000 donation from A.G. Edwards, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter will add three new handicap-accessible vehicles to its Safe Ride fleet over the next five years, the first of which has just been purchased. By expanding the Red Cross fleet with A.G. Edwards Safe Ride vehicles, A.G. Edwards is helping more seniors take advantage of this service.
“We are proud to partner with the American Red Cross through our sponsorship of the A.G. Edwards Safe Ride Program,” said Robert L. Bagby, chairman and chief executive officer of A.G. Edwards. “We also are pleased that A.G. Edwards’ involvement will enable many more seniors to take advantage of this program, as the demand for assisted transportation is at an all-time high in the St. Louis area.”
History of Red Cross Safe Ride:
Red Cross Safe Ride officially began nearly two years ago, when the St. Louis Area Chapter began offering specialized transportation for area seniors and special-needs individuals. Safe Ride has proven to be uniquely successful in its ability to provide door-to-door, handicap-accessible transportation with one-on-one client/driver attention. Furthermore, Safe Ride has provided that service at a price below market average.
“I don’t know what we would have done without Safe Ride,” says Julie Garegnani of Ballwin, MO, whose 81-year old father-in-law Vince Garegnani uses Safe Ride to get to his kidney dialysis clinic and back. “As much as we’d like to always be able to drive Vince to his appointments, our jobs prevent that. That’s why what the Red Cross is doing is so important.”
